About Advocates For Children

The CASA program began with a family court judge in Seattle, WA in 1977.  The judge, dissatisfied by the way the system worked when it came to the best interests of children, requested that a group of community volunteers called Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) be recruited and trained to provide children with a voice in court. The program was successful and there are now over 1,000 agencies across the United States, broken down by each Judicial District.

Advocates for Children is a 501(c)(3) founded in 1985 that supports abused and neglected children in Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert, and Lincoln counties in Colorado's 18th Judicial District with a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).  CASA volunteers are community members who go through a 30 hour initial training on all components of being a CASA.  After training CASAs are sworn-in to the Courts and are assigned a Dependency and Neglect case.  The CASA spends approximately 10-12 hours a month gettin to know the child(ren), understanding their situation, making recommendations, sharing concerns with the Court and confirming that the child(ren)'s needs are being met.  CASAs provide the children we work with much needed consistency and support.  Studies show that children who have a CASA colunteer are more likely to get the resources they need inside the courtroom and on a day-to-day basis that will help them be more productive citizens of the future.
